Summary

In a small town full of secrets, everyone’s a suspect。

When a body is discovered, bled dry on a beach, the sleepy seaside town of Weston-super-Mare wakes up to a nightmare。 For Detective Inspector Louise Blackwell, recently transferred to the town she last saw as a child, it’s her first case on the job。

The victim—Veronica Lloyd, an elderly volunteer at a local church—has puncture wounds to her hands。 When a priest is found killed in a nearby church in a similarly grisly condition, it becomes clear that Blackwell is dealing with a righteous and bloody murderer。 But the victims aren’t random。 The killer has a vendetta and is hell-bent on exacting twisted revenge for a dark secret dating back years—and there are more murders planned。

As the body count rises, Blackwell faces a race against time to solve the mystery of the murderer’s identity and put an end to the carnage。 She thought she knew Weston, but the town holds more secrets than she’d ever have imagined。 Who can she trust and who knows more than they are letting on?

She must discover the crimes that unite the victims—before it’s too late。

Good Book I was afraid I wouldn’t like this book。 I thought it was going to be another book about higher ups trying to get rid of an officer even though they’re good at their job。 But it was actually really good。 I had the development of the characters and the setting。 The mystery was gripping。 I can’t wait to read more。 I highly recommend this book。

Great plotI thoroughly enjoyed this。 I like stories where you already know who dunnit。 You then get to watch the police working it out and a good long reveal of the why。

I admit I don’t remember how I came to know about this book, but with it being based where I live, I had to read it。The story started quite slowly, but that may have been due to my trying to remember where certain places were, or if they’d ever existed/ name changes etc。Louise Blackwell is a DCI and was moved to a town station from Bristol due to an investigation that went horribly wrong。 She felt she should have been promoted rather than the person who was, leaving her feeling bitter about her I admit I don’t remember how I came to know about this book, but with it being based where I live, I had to read it。The story started quite slowly, but that may have been due to my trying to remember where certain places were, or if they’d ever existed/ name changes etc。Louise Blackwell is a DCI and was moved to a town station from Bristol due to an investigation that went horribly wrong。 She felt she should have been promoted rather than the person who was, leaving her feeling bitter about her transfer。In the small town where the elderly come to retire and families come for summer days out, a murder case becomes a shock to the town when an elderly ladies body is found with clear wounds。 As the investigation develops, Louise finds many dots to join and is determined this case will have a very different ending from the one in Bristol。I honestly didn’t have a favourite character as such, although I agreed a lot with the character Louise Blackwell。 It certainly wasn’t a bad read by any means and will look up the rest of the series! 。。。more

Set in Weston-super-Mare, this is a crime thriller about a female detective who's been banished to Weston after things went badly for her in Bristol。 Badly tortured bodies start appearing, all somehow connected to the local Catholic church community。This was a gripping tale, well told, with a good balance between mystery-solving and getting closer to the detective and understanding her personal life。 It was particularly interesting to me because my father grew up in Weston-super-Mare and went to Set in Weston-super-Mare, this is a crime thriller about a female detective who's been banished to Weston after things went badly for her in Bristol。 Badly tortured bodies start appearing, all somehow connected to the local Catholic church community。This was a gripping tale, well told, with a good balance between mystery-solving and getting closer to the detective and understanding her personal life。 It was particularly interesting to me because my father grew up in Weston-super-Mare and went to the local Catholic primary school - and there is a lot of local colour in this book。 。。。more

A good mystery, but there were issues that really bugged me。 This is set In a small village in England with 2 Catholic Churches, yet the lead Detective, who had been to Mass as a kid, seemed clueless about Catholicism? The other problem was the blatant male BS that goes along with most police procedurals。 I hate that women still face this kind of rampant crap in real life and in literature。

This was my first book by Matt Brolly。 I liked the book overall, however it wasn't a page turner for me。 On a personal level I discovered that unlike other genres where I like to hear the story from other character viewpoints, I didn't appreciate it with this book。 Interesting! I am however intrigued to see what the future holds for Louise, so I will still be giving the next book in the series a go。 This was my first book by Matt Brolly。 I liked the book overall, however it wasn't a page turner for me。 On a personal level I discovered that unlike other genres where I like to hear the story from other character viewpoints, I didn't appreciate it with this book。 Interesting! so, not much of a whodunit as we know whodunit at the beginning。And yes, another female detective, beset by issues, problems, harassment by male co-workers, insecurities, secret sexual adventures, family issues, alone, blah, blah, blah。Seems to be the trend these days。But I enjoyed the story, the introduction of the characters, the way things played out, the police finally putting the pieces together (is that a spoiler?) made for an easy fun read, and despite other people's objections to the her so, not much of a whodunit as we know whodunit at the beginning。And yes, another female detective, beset by issues, problems, harassment by male co-workers, insecurities, secret sexual adventures, family issues, alone, blah, blah, blah。Seems to be the trend these days。But I enjoyed the story, the introduction of the characters, the way things played out, the police finally putting the pieces together (is that a spoiler?) made for an easy fun read, and despite other people's objections to the heroine's introspection, I enjoyed it。 It made her more 'human。'I did think the killer's rationale was a bit far fetched, but then again, I only know 'normal' people。 LOL#2 is already added to the TBR list, which is overly long anyhoo, but I'll come back with I need a 'simpler' procedural than something Penny or James puts together which sometimes over tax my brains。。 。。。more

A strange and frightening return to my birthplaceThis novel held me from beginning to end。The story has a strange fascination, gradually you find yourself drawn in and unable to leave。 For me, the familiarity of the roads, the beach front and the winter views across to Steepholm was an added bonus。 The author rekindled the feel of the wind and rain and experience again the ferocity of high tide on the rocks around the old pier。I enjoyed the 3-dimensional characters and feel a need to know what the A strange and frightening return to my birthplaceThis novel held me from beginning to end。The story has a strange fascination, gradually you find yourself drawn in and unable to leave。 For me, the familiarity of the roads, the beach front and the winter views across to Steepholm was an added bonus。 The author rekindled the feel of the wind and rain and experience again the ferocity of high tide on the rocks around the old pier。I enjoyed the 3-dimensional characters and feel a need to know what the future holds for the survivors and to be pulled back into another spellbinding story。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 A good police procedural。 Three stars because there was an odd subplot about a stalker-like adversary that I never did quite figure out。 The character was treated as menacing but never actually did anything threatening or even very out of line。 May be explained in future books in the series, I guess。

Super A really good read that had me enthralled right from the beginning。 It had all the emotions that had me turning the pages quickly。 However, the swearing really put me off even though it’s about police it’s not acceptable to use bad language。 Therefore 4 stars awarded。

Good ReadWhile I thought the book started out a little slow, it soon picked up to a better pace。 It was interesting enough to keep reading with much anticipation that as I read, the more involved I was in wanting to see how it ended and who would survive。

Loved this book。 The characters were great and had a fascinating story to tell。 I especially liked the layout of this story line。 The killer was known to the reader but it was interesting to see how the police tried to catch him。 Louise has been treated very badly by her former policemen and administrators。 One policeman in particular enjoys taunting her trying to get her to screw up so he can appear better。 This secondary storyline is also quite good and continues a thread to the stories。 This Loved this book。 The characters were great and had a fascinating story to tell。 I especially liked the layout of this story line。 The killer was known to the reader but it was interesting to see how the police tried to catch him。 Louise has been treated very badly by her former policemen and administrators。 One policeman in particular enjoys taunting her trying to get her to screw up so he can appear better。 This secondary storyline is also quite good and continues a thread to the stories。 This is a good one and I think you will enjoy this book。 。。。more
